Seventeen-year-old Fanny Herbert takes her former employer, Reverend Andrews, to court to prove paternity of her son.
Fanny’s god-fearing parents are proud when she leaves her home in West Bromwich to accompany the esteemed preacher, Reverend Andrews, to Sheffield where she will work as a maid for his family.
Despite her strict upbringing in the Primitive Methodist faith, Fanny, a naïve young girl, finds herself pregnant.
She claims to have been seduced by the Reverend. She believes that the Reverend is in love with her. Reverend Andrews denies all of Fanny’s accusations. He names a local man, Joseph Butt as the father of her child. The Reverend insists that Fanny is only accusing him because she wants a wealthy man to support her illegitimate child.
Her mother, Rhoda, is willing to risk the family finances and reputation to fight for Fanny’s rights, but then all but bullies her daughter into handing baby Fred into her care.

The first thirty years of Jane’s working life were spent as a teacher in England. At age fifty she relocated to Lanzarote where she taught English in schools and ran a Language Academy.
